France’s northeastern Champagne region is famed the world over for its remarkable sparkling wines which have become a universal symbol of luxury. The relatively cool climate creates challenges for its winemakers, but also means Champagne is perfectly suited to producing refined and elegant sparkling wines from the region’s classic triumvirate of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

The origins of Champagne’s sparkling wines are shrouded in mystery; fanciful local legends credit 17th century monk Dom Perignon with the accidental discovery of the secondary fermentation process, while others indicate it was actually the English who were the first to invent the method. During the 19th century the region and its wines enjoyed dramatic growth thanks to the rising popularity of Champagne as a luxury beverage. Today there are nearly 16,000 grape growers and 300 Champagne houses. Top Champagne houses include Krug, Salon, and Moet & Chandon which produces the Dom Perignon brand.
